JULY 2004 -
IMPORTANT UPDATE ON VA DISABILITY
FUNDING
Veterans who are receiving VA Disability are in
for some bad news. The Department of Defense has
made some changes that affect disabled veterans and
their ability to convert their VA Disability
payments into cash.
New Federal Legislation, HR 2297, was recently
passed by both houses of Congress and was signed
into law by the President. This legislation
effectively prohibits pensioners from selling their
V.A. pension streams. This is true if all or most
of your military income comes from VA
Disability.
Due to these changes, a veteran whose military
income comes solely from VA cannot sell their
payments. However, at this point in time, a veteran
MAY be able to sell their payments IF the VA
Disability portion comprises no more then 50% of
your total military income. If that sounds
confusing, it is.
To simplify, try figuring it this way. If you
are presently receiving military payments totalling
$1,200 per month, and only $300 of this comes from
VA Disability payments, you may still be eligible
to sell. The remaining must be regular military
retirement or DOD / VSI income.
Of course, all other eligibility criteria, such
as reasonable credit*,
and another form of income, still applies. See
below for more information.
At Integrity Funding Sources, we are commited to
helping those veterans who have given so much for
us. To that end, we will continue to seek out ways
to provide these financial services for our
veterans and their families as long as the law
allows it.
